How to turn photos into pixel art

Step 01

Upload your image

Click the button or drop a file to load it locally. Nothing is sent to a server.

PNG, JPG, and WebP files up to 12 MB are supported.

Step 02

Set the pixel size

Use the slider to control how large each pixel block appears in the final art.

Larger blocks create a more retro look while smaller blocks keep more detail.

Step 03

Adjust the colors

Limit the color depth or snap to curated palettes such as retro green or neon pop.

Try different palettes to match the vibe of your game or illustration.

Step 04

Download the result

Save the crisp PNG output and drop it directly into your project.

The export keeps transparency and sharp edges.

What does pixelation do?

Pixelation reduces an image into a grid of colored squares. Our renderer samples the original photo, downsamples it, and then scales it back up without smoothing. You can further stylize the result by controlling how many colors are allowed or mapping pixels onto nostalgic palettes.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to popular questions about the pixel art generator.

Does the tool work offline?

Yes. Once the page loads everything runs in your browser with Web APIs, so your images stay on your device.

Can I use the output commercially?

Absolutely. The generated artwork is yours to use in games, social posts, or client work.

What image sizes are supported?

Large photos are automatically scaled to fit into a 4096 pixel canvas to keep performance smooth.

Will transparency be preserved?

Yes. PNG uploads keep their alpha channel in the pixel art export.

Can I choose my own palette?

A custom palette editor is on our roadmap. For now pick from curated presets or limit the color depth slider.
